  • Very good support with comfortable top layers, making it suitable for a wide range of people and sleep styles.
  • Features advanced cooling technologies for an all-round cooler sleep.
  • Excellent edge support.

Disadvantages

  • The top layers may be too soft and squishy for people who don’t like sinking into their foams.
  • The foams do still retain some heat and feel warmer than products without memory foam.
  • The mattress is very heavy in its box.
  • Emma has been struggling with delivery issues, resulting in rude or inconvenient deliveries and products that are damaged due to having been stored too long. On the plus side, we had no trouble with customer support, as is often the case.

Who is the Emma Luxe Cooling most suitable for?

  • Designed for people after a medium-firm feel.
  • Great for people looking for superior edge support.
  • Good choice for couples.

Emma Luxe Cooling mattress composition

The Emma Luxe Cooling mattress is a premium hybrid mattress by Emma Sleep UK. 🏆

It features multiple mattress layers, which include:

  • A moisture-resistant top cover
  • Graphite-infused ThermoSync foam for advanced temperature regulation
  • Halo memory foam for body-hugging comfort
  • Pressure-relieving supportive foam
  • A layer of 12 cm (4.7 inches) Aeroflex pocket springs for comfort, support, and breathability
  • Base foam with reinforced edges

Let’s look at all of these in a tad more detail.

You can also skip this part and jump straight down to the comfort levels of the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress.

Emma Luxe Cooling mattress layers

We’ll look at the cover further down, but first, let’s look at the actual mattress layers.

1. ThermoSync foam

The first mattress layer is comprised of ThermoSync® technology foam, which is infused with graphite particles.

Graphite is known to capture excess heat during the night, which helps regulate body temperature and keeps you cooler and more comfortable.

2. Halo memory foam

Emma’s Halo memory foam provides targeted support for enhanced spinal alignment and moulds to your shape for body-hugging comfort.

3. Supportive foam

This transitional layer between the memory foam and pocket springs offers additional support and pressure point relief.

4. Pocket springs

The full-size Aeroflex pocket springs give your mattress additional support and pressure relief abilities.

Pocket springs also allow for more airflow, enhancing overall breathability and allowing you to sleep more comfortably without overheating.

5. HRX base foam

The High Resiliency Extra (HRX) base foam provides further support, stability and durability.

The base foam also extends around the perimeter of the mattress and over the springs, allowing for superior edge support.

Emma Luxe Cooling mattress cover

The Emma Luxe Cooling mattress cover is moisture-resistant, easy to clean, and breathable, further helping to regulate your temperature during the night.

Conveniently, the moisture-wicking top cover (made of 99% polyester and 1% elastane) can be removed and popped in the washing machine at 40℃ for a fuss-free cleaning solution.

This is ideal for those concerned about hygiene or allergy sufferers.

The grey mesh side cover also features four handles to help you rotate the mattress more comfortably.

Unfortunately, though, we felt the placement of these wasn’t very ideal and ended up rotating the mattress along the edges instead of using the handles.

Lastly, the mattress cover has a non-slip base, which prevents your mattress from sliding or slipping on your bed frame, something that's particularly convenient if you're using an ottoman bed base.

How firm is the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress?

Emma Sleep UK rates the Emma Luxe Cooling as a medium-firm mattress and gives it a 5.5 firmness rating, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.

We’d rate it more on the firmer side (but more on this below) and have placed it at 6 on our Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. 🧸🧱

emma luxe cooling mattress firmness

You’ll notice two sensations when sleeping on the Emma Luxe Cooling:

  • The top few layers seem quite soft. If you’re supporting yourself on your elbows, for instance, you’ll notice that you’ll sink in quite deeply. This is because the top layers of the mattress are very adaptable and point-elastic, offering body-hugging orthopaedic support. The soft feel of the upper layers is immediately apparent.
  • But right below this, you’ll be hit by the firmness of the support foam and pocket springs. These are definitely on the firmer side, ensuring you’ll enjoy exceptional support and won’t sink into the foams too deeply.

We found that the mattress feels soft and squishy overall, but once lying down, you’ll be met with a firmer feel.

What makes the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress stand out overall is the exceptional edge support.

It has some of the best edge support we’ve experienced in bed-in-a-box mattresses, largely due to the HRX base foam that wraps around the perimeter of the mattress.

The Emma NextGen Premium, to draw a contrasting example, has springs that reach the edge of the mattress.

While springs are normally quite supportive, these sink down with any pressure applied, especially around the perimeter, resulting in mediocre edge support.

If you’re looking for a mattress that will keep you supported right up to the edge or one that will allow you to sit on the side comfortably while tying your shoelaces or spritzing some lavender pillow mist to get you ready to snooze, the Emma Luxe Cooling is a great choice. 🙌

How comfortable is the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress?

We loved sleeping on this mattress for our Emma Cooling mattress review and think it offers a fabulous sleep experience. 😴

It’s an excellent combination of comfort and support, which allowed us to wake up back-pain-free and well-rested night after night.

It did take some time to get used to the mattress, though.

emma luxe cooling mattress cover
We found the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress super comfortable.

As you may be aware, most bed-in-a-box brands offer a risk-free trial period of more than 30 days since it can take up to 3 weeks to get used to the feel of a new mattress.

This was definitely the case with the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress.

While the exceptional stability and edge support were immediately evident, the top layers felt a bit too soft, and our testers didn’t enjoy sinking into those few layers as deeply.

This took around 2 weeks to get used to, after which our testers really adapted to the mattress and it turned into the most wonderful sleep.

You may have a different experience here, as it largely depends on whether or not you only use your mattress for sleeping or if you’re one of those “I use my bed as my occasional office” type of people who enjoys reading in bed, taking phone calls, or even sipping hot cocoa while writing a few emails. ☕️

As an aside: Never sip hot cocoa in bed if you haven’t invested in a waterproof mattress protector first to safeguard your prized possession against any spills.

It also depends on which mattress you’re switching over from.

If you’re coming from a softer all-foam mattress, you may notice the firmness of the Emma Luxe Cooling more.

But if you're switching over from a firmer mattress, you'll notice the soft feel of the Luxe Cooling more.

We had switched over from a very firm traditional-style pocket sprung mattress and, before that, the Simba Hybrid Essential with micro springs in its top layers, both of which offer very firm sleeping surfaces.

Which sleeping position is the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress best for?

We had testers of all sleeping positions try the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress, and - even though it’s rare to say - we felt that the mattress would be suitable for all sleeping positions.

  • It was definitely firm and supportive enough for lighter-weight stomach sleepers, though we certainly would not recommend this sleeping position to avoid excessive neck pain.
  • It was also definitely firm and supportive enough for lighter-weight and average-weight back sleepers, ensuring optimal spinal alignment and just a little bit of sinkage for the pelvis.
  • The top few layers were also soft enough to allow for enough sinkage for side sleepers.

There is one caveat, though: The mattress will be suitable for all sleeping positions for average-weight sleepers, and your experience may differ according to your body weight.

Lighter-weight sleepers may be comfortable in the back and stomach positions but may find that they don’t sink into the top foam layers deeply enough to allow for good spinal alignment in the side sleeping position.

spinal aligmnet
Side sleepers should always focus on good spinal alignment.

On the opposite end of the scale, very heavy-weight sleepers may find that the top layers of the mattress aren’t thick enough and that they actually sink in too deeply, which could result in some discomfort.

All our testers were of average weight, between 55 kg (121 lbs) and 95 kg (209 lbs), and we recorded a maximum sinkage of 2 cm (0.8 inches) in the side sleeping position, with sinkage for the back and stomach positions averaging between 0.2 - 0.5 cm (0.08 - 0.2 inches).

If you are uncertain, rest assured that you can try the mattress during the risk-free 200-night trial period - more info below.

Does the Emma Cooling mattress sleep hot?

Many mattress brands proudly advertise their advanced cooling technologies - but it’s just a bunch of gibberish.

This does not seem to be the case with the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress.

Well, to an extent.

While we didn’t have the chance to test it during a UK heatwave, we did test on both hotter and cooler days and felt comfortable throughout. ☀️

But, this did depend on a number of other factors.

emma luxe cooling mattress composition and cover
The composition and cover allow for enhanced airflow.

Let's backtrack for a second:

If you’ve ever slept on a memory foam mattress, you’ll know that this type of foam stores a lot of body heat - so much so that you can get up in the middle of the night, go to the bathroom, come back, and still feel the warmth of where you lay previously. 🔥

Needless to say, this is not ideal.

In our experience, the graphite-infused cooling foam of the Emma Luxe Cooling offers a much more pleasant experience, and we never felt hot or clammy at night.

But this did depend significantly on the bedding used:

  • On warmer days, we slept with a summer duvet - the 4.5g tog Simba Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet, itself a very temperature-regulating product. At no point did we feel that the mattress retained heat while sleeping with this duvet.
  • On colder days, though, we slept with an all-season duvet - the 10.5 tog Panda Cloud Duvet. With the heavier tog duvet, we did feel that the mattress retained more heat and felt much warmer overall. It was still pleasant, and we didn't feel like we were overheating, but the Luxe Cooling did definitely feel much warmer than other mattresses we've slept on with the same duvet.

It seems that the ThermoSync foam, temperature-regulating cover, and pocket springs do the trick in regulating the temperature more effectively, but your experience of the heat retention properties of the mattress will vary significantly depending on external factors - and how hot or cold you run normally.

air circulation in pocket sprung mattress
Mattresses with springs tend to sleep cooler.

None of our testers are usually hot sleepers, and the warmer feel is something we've only experienced with memory foam mattresses.

Therefore, while we do think this mattress isn't unpleasantly hot, we wouldn't recommend it as an entirely cool mattress either.

We used cooling bedding throughout our testing as well, and it’s really worth remembering that your sleep accessories (bedding, duvet, etc.) significantly affect your overall sleeping temperature. 🌡️

If you’re a very hot sleeper or prone to night sweats, we’d recommend opting for something like silk bedding or very high-quality cotton, like the Aeyla Clean Silver Sheet set, for enhanced cooling.

We’ve recommended a few of our favourites below.

Our favourite UK cooling bedding:

Is the Emma Luxe Cooling well-suited to couples?

The Emma Luxe Cooling is a great mattress for couples. 👩‍❤️‍👨

couple on a mattress
Both partners should find the mattress comfortable.

We say this for two reasons:

  • The mattress has low motion transfer, meaning movements from one side of the mattress aren’t carried over to the other side (allowing for disturbance-free sleep).
  • The mattress has exceptional edge support, so couples can enjoy the full width without the fear of tumbling off the sides.

On the downside, the soft and squishy layers on top may not make this the most suitable mattress for sex, but this will largely depend on your body weight and how much sinkage you experience overall.

Emma Luxe Cooling mattress sizes

Like most Emma UK mattresses, the Luxe Cooling is available in a range of mattress sizes.

These include:

  • Emma Luxe Cooling single: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling small double mattress: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6’3”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling double mattress: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling mattress king size: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling mattress super king: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling EU single: 90 x 200 cm (3’ x 6’6”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling EU double: 140 x 200 cm (4’7” x 6’6”)
  • Emma Luxe Cooling EU queen: 160 x 200 cm (5’3” x 6’6”)

If you’re sleeping on your own, you can go for any size that suits your bedroom and budget.

standard uk mattress sizes
The Luxe Cooling mattress is available in more than the standard UK sizes.

If you’re sharing your bed with a partner (or pet), we’d recommend going for the larger mattress sizes. 🐶

The double Emma Luxe Cooling would be the minimum here, but the king- or super-king-size would be preferable (if you have the space and budget available).

We’d also recommend sticking to the standard UK mattress sizes.

While the EU sizes are great if you’ve moved over from Europe or bought an EU-sized bed frame from IKEA, the UK sizes will be much more convenient since you’ll find the best bed frames and bedding in matching dimensions.

Emma Luxe Cooling mattress depth

The Emma Cooling mattress has a height of 25 cm (9.8 inches).

This is the standard bed-in-a-box height and fits comfortably with most bed frames and bedding.

Importantly: Emma does provide a leeway of 2 cm (0.8 inches) across the length, width, and depth of the mattress.

person measuring mattress sizes
We’d recommend checking the height of your mattress.

This means that if your mattress only expands to 23 cm (9 inches), for example, the mattress will not be counted as faulty.

But if your mattress expands to anything below this, it means there’s a manufacturing fault and Emma will replace the mattress (simply contact customer support).

That said, the mattress should not have been stored in its box for longer than 4 weeks, and you do need to give it 2 weeks to allow for full expansion.

We’ve had 4 of the Emma mattresses we’ve tested recently only expand to a height of 20 cm (7.9 inches), so, unfortunately, this problem seems to be more common than you’d think.

Emma Sleep UK delivery conditions

Emma UK works with DPD, UPS, and Rhenus to offer free standard shipping across the mainland, and your product is dispatched within 2 - 5 working days.

Unfortunately, it's no secret that the company’s been struggling with delivery issues lately.

Emma customer complaints on delivery have included deliveries not arriving, zero communication, rude service, boxes being left out in the rain, and damaged products being delivered.

Unfortunately, we’ve also experienced a multitude of these issues but have it on good authority that Emma is working hard to get the delivery problems sorted. 😅

Hopefully, it will be back up to standard in no time.

The Emma Luxe Cooling is a very heavy mattress delivered rolled up in a box.

Should you experience any issues, the best bet would be to reach out to the customer services team directly.

We’ve had a good experience with the e-mail support team to solve our own issues with the Emma delivery process and damaged products.

How is the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress delivered?

Once your Emma Luxe Cooling mattress has arrived in good order, your next step will be to carry the box up to your bedroom and onto your bed frame.

bed-in-a-box mattresses
The Luxe Cooling is a bed-in-a-box mattress.

Please remember that Emma only delivers to the front door of your building, and the Luxe Cooling mattress can weigh up to 40 kg (88 lbs) for the largest size, so you may need a friend to help you here.

Even the single mattress weighs 19 kg (41 lbs), which may be too heavy to carry alone for quite a number of people, especially if you’re elderly or disabled.

The box the mattress is delivered in is also quite large - measuring 45 x 45 x 110cm (17.7 x 17.7 x 43 inches) - so it may not be as convenient to handle as you’d think. 📦

If you feel that you may struggle, we highly recommend paying an additional fee for premium delivery, which will allow you to pick a delivery date, receive room-of-choice delivery, and also make use of an old mattress removal service.

How do you unbox your Emma Luxe Cooling mattress?

Once you’ve managed to get your new boxed mattress onto your bed frame, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  • Open up the box and slide the mattress onto your bed frame. This may require two people, depending on how heavy the mattress is and the type of bed frame you have. Ottoman beds, for example, are notoriously cumbersome when unboxing new mattresses as the frame has a tendency to jump back up again.
  • Once the mattress has been taken out of the box, position it onto your frame and carefully cut open the outer plastic wrapping.
  • Unfold the mattress so it’s correctly laid out on your bed frame.
  • Then proceed to remove the rest of the plastic packaging.
  • Your mattress will begin to inflate as soon as the vacuum seal has been broken, but full expansion can take up to 6 hours.

If your mattress fails to inflate to its full size, we’d recommend re-checking after 48 hours and then again after 14 days.

unpacking emma luxe cooling mattress

If your mattress still hasn't reached its correct size after 14 days, this could indicate a manufacturing fault, and you'll be eligible for a product replacement.

We only experienced very faint off-gassing with our Emma Luxe Cooling, but we’d still recommend keeping a window open for fresh air just in case you encounter that chemical “new” smell. 🪟

It’s worth remembering that off-gassing is not toxic or harmful, but it may be a little unpleasant.

Does the Emma Luxe Cooling come with a trial period?

The Emma Cooling mattress comes with a 200-night trial period, giving you the chance to test it out in the comfort of your own home.

We’d highly recommend sleeping on the mattress for at least 3 weeks before making up your mind on whether you like it or not.

Emma luxe cooling mattress trial period
The Emma Luxe Cooling comes with a 200-day trial period.

This will give you the chance to try out the mattress in the comfort of your own home to assess whether it’s right for you or not.

It took us about 2 weeks to get used to the feel of this mattress, after which it became incredibly comfortable.

Of course, if you’re struggling with back pain or still don’t feel comfortable after this initial period, you can send the mattress back and get a full refund. 💰

Emma UK will organise the entire returns process.

Should you buy the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress?

The Emma Luxe Cooling is a fantastic mattress and one of Emma UK’s most premium products currently available.

This is certainly one of the best mattresses on the market at the moment, and it’s well worth the investment.

We would recommend it to:

  • People who enjoy medium-firm mattresses.
  • Average-weight sleepers with any sleeping position preference.
  • Those looking for superior edge support.
  • Couples.

You can also try the mattress for up to 200 nights before making a final decision about whether you like it or not.
